Unearthing Innovation: The Journey of EDN's iOS App Development
Building a comprehensive iOS app for our smart garden device was a rewarding challenge. Bridging the gap between hardware and software required a deep dive into software development libraries, AWS services, and product management. This is the behind-the-scenes look at the technical depth and strategic decisions that powered our iOS app from concept to launch.
Initial Steps and MVP Realization
The inception of our mobile app was driven by the need for seamless communication with our hardware products. Initially developed with React and integrated with a third-party IoT cloud provider, our MVP served as a functional prototype demonstrating our vision. However, we quickly encountered limitations, particularly in hardware connectivity, that necessitated a pivot in our approach.
Transition to AWS and Enhanced Hardware Compatibility
Recognizing the constraints, we embarked on two significant shifts. Firstly, we transitioned from the third-party IoT platform to build our own robust architecture on Amazon Web Services (AWS), leveraging IoT Core, Event Stream, and Amplify. This move not only enhanced the resilience of our system but also allowed for seamless integration across hardware, firmware, and the iOS app.
The second major change involved hardware enhancements to facilitate better connectivity, including modifications to our PCB board for authentication purposes and the integration of HomeKit SDK into our firmware. These adjustments were critical for launching our product in Apple's stores and ensuring compatibility with Apple's ecosystem.
Leveraging AWS and Apple SDKs for a Superior Pairing Experience
One of the cornerstone features of our iOS app was the implementation of the AWS Amplify SDK alongside the Apple HomeKit SDK. This combination significantly improved the Wi-Fi pairing process, addressing one of the most common challenges in IoT and smart home products. By simplifying the connectivity across various network bands and routers, we provided our users with a seamless and “magical” pairing experience.
A Multi-threaded Design
Our iOS app was engineered with a multi-threaded design, enabling simultaneous communication with multiple smart garden devices. This design philosophy extended to discovering and controlling other smart home products within the same network, thus enhancing the overall utility of our app.
More Than Pairing
The EDN app was not just about pairing; it was a holistic platform that empowered users to monitor and manage their gardens effectively. Features included custom monitoring for different plants, LED light scheduling, water level alerts, and harvest reminders. A particularly innovative aspect was our dynamic subscription model, which tailored plant shipments based on the user's actual gardening activity, reducing waste and enhancing personalization.
Understanding the importance of customer support, we integrated a comprehensive service module within the app, including FAQs and direct communication channels. Additionally, users could explore and purchase new plants and products directly, making the app a one-stop-shop for all gardening needs.
The choice to develop the app in Swift was intentional, aimed at harnessing the language's robust features and compatibility with iOS devices. This decision ensured that our app was not only powerful but also provided a smooth and responsive user experience.
